The Classic Mustang of 1965 was the GT upgrade available on all models. This option was available only with one of the optional 289ci four-barrel V-8 engines. The standard engines were also upgraded with the six cylinder getting 200ci and the V-8 getting a 289ci two-barrel. Along with the power boost came a special handling pack for the GT models with up-rated springs, stabilizer and more responsive steering. Brakes on the GT are now 10-ins disc brakes and the exhaust is a dual system.
Cosmetically the GT gets a new chrome front grill bar with inset round fog lights at each end and the rear valance gets two chrome exhaust trumpets with matching chrome trimmed cutouts. GT badge and understated lower body stripes add to the overall effect.
Instrumentation has always played it part in attracting the more discerning driver and the GT was given a new 5 dial panel with the larger central speedometer offering a top speed of 140 mph. As an option a Rally-Pac gave a column mounted tachometer and 24 hr clock.
Another option pack was the ‘Interior Décor Group’ that improved the interior of the Mustang with galloping horse seat inserts and walnut look panels.
The potential for racing the Mustang started to be realized with the production in 1965 of a special A/FX Drag Racing car. These were highly modified big-block motors that were designed to run the quarter mile and they did have success gaining a class record of 10.43 seconds.
