The first production Ford Mustangs were made available in April hence the term 1964½ being applied to those early models. The body styles for the Classic 1964 Mustang were the standard notch back coupe a very smart looking convertible and soon followed by a 2+2 fastback. This was a beautiful looking car that even today continues to attract many admirers as it did back then when it was launched. Truly this was one of the most recognizable and desirable American Classic Car.

It was not only looks that drew admirers as the car from day one built a reputation of good handling, drivability and performance. But the Mustang of course is a wild horse and in June 1964 the high performance Hi-Po 289ci V-8 engine producing 271 horsepower gave the car a real sense of its namesake. This engine was a beefed up plant that could really stand the rigors of sports driving and with it an up-rated steering, suspension and optional front disc brakes.

Power plant lineup for those early models included the 101-hp 170-ci six-cylinder, the 164-hp 260-ci V-8, the 210-hp 289-ci V-8 4 valve and the 289-ci V-8. Transmission was a 3-speed manual as standard but with optional 4-speed manual or Auto box depending on the engine type.

Highlight for the Mustang of 1964 was it selection for use as the Official Indianapolis 500 Pace Car. A white convertible was used with racing stripes and a tuned V-8 that really caught the attention of those race going fans. This was just a sign of the type of Mustang that was to emerge in future years.
